King Hedley II by Playwright August Wilson

OK so, for my drama class this semester, I was given a monologue to do from the August Wilson Play King Hedley II. I've always heard of Mr. Wilson's plays but never had the opportunity to take on one of the roles. The monologue is Tonya, King's wife, explaining to King why she does not want to keep their baby that she is pregnant with. This piece is so compelling and so real. Almost every reason she states, are reasons why today, I don't want to have anymore children. The state of this world, our communities are at disarray. Why would anyone want to have a child these days aside from selfish reasons. ........"you have to fight to keep them alive!" I love my daughter and I do the best I can possibly do for her but did I think about all she has to face as she grows up before I had her? NO. Did I consider the fact that these days you have parents who don't teach there children right from wrong or lead by good example and therefore you have preschool age children bringing drugs and weapons to school? NO. Did I even make sure I was in a good position financially and educationally before I gave birth to her? NO. So many of us, make decisions without full thought that does not just affect us but our loved ones too. I do not for one second want any of you to think or believe that I regret having my child. She is my world. I just wish I was in a different mind set before I made the choice to lay down and make her. This play, this monologue, sparked so many emotions inside of me. For any of you that has had the chance to ever see this play, please let me know your view on it. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, google it and buy it.
